Inman Family 2005 Pinot Gris

Winemaker Tasting Notes:
Pale straw color with floral aromas, pear and stone fruit. Tastes of white peaches, nectarines and pear with citrus undertones along with a clean, wet stone minerality. The wine is totally dry and has excellent acidity. It is medium bodied and is complex, exhibiting a long and balanced finish.

Vineyard Notes:
The fruit for this wine comes from both Olivet Grange and Saralee’s vineyards.

Olivet Grange Vineyard is the Inman Family’s estate vineyard. This 10.5 acre vineyard is located at the junction of Olivet and Piner Roads amidst some of Sonoma County's and the Russian River Valley's most respected vineyards. The property is farmed organically and was planted by the Inmans in 2000.

Saralee’s Vineayrd is located just a mile from Olive Grange, off Slusser Road. Inman Family Wine have designated rows within the Duckblind block. In 2005, the same organic compost used at Olivet Grange was used in the designated rows. Although not organic, this vineyard is farmed sustainably.

Harvest and Winemaking Notes:
2005 was a very cool summer. The wet spring put a lot of pressure on the vines for disease, but regular applications of organic fungicides held botrytis and mildew at bay. The Olivet Grange fruit was harvested by hand by friends and family at dawn on September 2, 2005, while down the road at Saralee’s the Inman Family designated rows were being harvested, also by hand, so that the fruit would arrive at the winery at the same time to be pressed together.

The Olivet Grange fruit was fermented in four six-ton open top fermenters. The clones – 114, 115, 667 and 777 were kept separate from the time they arrived at the winery until they were brought together just prior to bottling on 12 August 2005.

We pressed whole clusters to add complexity and structure. Prior to fermentation, we settled and racked the juice overnight. No additions were made, other than yeast. After inoculation with the yeast strain 58W3 the wine was fermented in a combination of neutral French oak and stainless steel barrels. The primary fermentation lasted 10 days at a maximum temperature of 66˚ Fahrenheit. Malolactic fermentation was induced in only six of the fourteen barrels. The lees were stirred weekly to increase complexity and mouthfeel. Prior to bottling on March 18, 2006 we racked, blended, cold stabilized and sterile filtered the wine.
