Mill Creek Vineyards and Winery 2001 Merlot, Estate
Winemaker Notes:
The grapes for this 2001 Merlot originated from Mill Creek’s estate property in Dry Creek Valley. The wine was fermented in a combination of temperature controlled, stainless steel tanks and open top fermentors. The tanks were pumped over twice a day and the fermentors punched down three times each day. After malolactic fermentation the new wine was racked to 60 gallon American and French oak barrels and aged for 14 months. After a light filtration, the total production of approximately 3,567 cases was bottled on May 19 and 20, 2003.
Tasting Notes:
Our 2001 Merlot begins with a nose of gunflint and black pepper. Flavors are of blackberry and tart cherry, with considerable notes of spice and a touch of vanilla. The wine has a dark ruby color and exhibits medium body with fine tannins.
Food Pairing Notes:
This wine would pair especially well with red meats. It would also go well with grilled salmon with sage, grilled lamb or a rich lamb shank dish. Also excellent with bleu cheese or sharp cheddar.
