Wine Recommendation

Wine:Jus Soli Winery 2004 Pinot Noir (Mendocino County)

Jus Soli Winery

2004 Pinot Noir
(Mendocino County)

When I was wine director at Aqua a few years back, I remember meeting Tom Garrett. His name sounded familiar but I didn’t link him with the Wine Spectator, where he had been covering California wines for several years. What did leave an impression on me was the Detert Family Vineyards Cabernet Franc, made from grapes grown on his family's vineyard in Oakville and formerly sold for blending into Opus One and Robert Mondavi Reserve. When Tom introduced me to Revana, where he works together with Heidi Barrett, I was thrilled as well.

What a pleasant surprise to find Tom involved with this property. The partners are Tom and KC Garrett; Mike Carlson and Heather Staples, Peter Simon and Felicia Strankman, Mike and Cory O'Donnell, and Jesse Wurtzel. Tom is the winemaker, and in addition to 265 cases of this $20 Mendocino Pinot Noir, they produce a Dry Creek Zinfandel and a Sonoma Valley Syrah.

Bright, pale ruby and viscous, the wine has aromas of strawberry, rhubarb, cranberry, Fernet Branca, tar, bramble, and earth. On the palate it is medium-bodied and vibrantly fruity with ripe blackberry, cranberry, and strawberry notes, along with cedar box, cinnamon, orange peel, and clove notes.
