Wine:Fox Run Vineyards 2005 Pinot Noir (Finger Lakes)

Fox Run Vineyards

2005 Pinot Noir
(Finger Lakes)

The Fox Run Winery is favorably situated on a high ridge overlooking the indigo blue waters of Seneca Lake, the deepest of the Finger Lakes. More important than the stunning vistas enjoyed by winery visitors is the climate moderation that this location on the western side of the lake provides. Steep east-facing slopes coupled with the vineyards’ proximity to water account for the successful growing of a wide range of vinifera varieties in Fox Run's 55 acre vineyard, including Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Gamay, Lemberger, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.

Fox Run’s winemaker is Canadian born/Australian trained Peter Bell, whose first winemaking stint in the Finger Lakes was at the venerable Dr. Konstantin Frank Vinifera Wine Cellars over on Keuka Lake. In 1995, Bell took over winemaking responsibilities at Fox Run, where he found a similar drive to advance vinifera winegrowing in the region.

Across the northeast, the 2005 growing season will be remembered as a benchmark vintage, particularly for reds, which enjoyed well above average ripeness levels. This is immediately evident in Fox Run's 2005 Pinot Noir, which shows good color intensity for a Finger Lakes Pinot. The nose is highlighted by fresh red berry aromas with an appealing dusty earthiness. Tart cherry and berry flavors ride a tight structure of taut acidity and velvety fine tannins. Despite the ripeness of the vintage, this wine has no trace of over ripe jamminess, and retains the characteristic acid backbone that is a hallmark of the region. Overall, a very balanced wine and a solid Pinot that offers good varietal character with a regional signature.
