2006 Rose(Arroyo Grande Valley)
When Louisa Sawyer Lindquist of Verdad decided to pursue her dream of Spanish varietals in California, she went straight for her first love, Albarino. For her red wine, Tempranillo was the obvious choice. Both varietals were seriously underplanted in the state. But she also wanted a refreshing rosé, the kind she had enjoyed on her visits to Spain.
She learned her Spanish lessons well and it shows in this wonderfully salmon hued Rosé, primarily made from Grenache (Garnacha in Spain). A very stylish wine, it shows aromatics of strawberry, raspberry and maraschino cherry, along with a floral lilt. Lively in the mouth, with a pleasant creaminess (from 1/3 malolactic fermentation), the vibrant flavors are of just-picked red berries, watermelon and wood spice, the latter from its time in neurtral French oak barrels. A great party quaffer, but with some complexity from darker fruit flavors on the finish and more substance and structure than most pink wines.
