Mission Hill Winery 2006 Reserve Riesling Fritz Hasselbach Collection (Okanagan Valley)

Mission Hill Winery

2006 Reserve Riesling Fritz Hasselbach Collection
(Okanagan Valley)

The Okanagan Valley has experienced its own Riesling Renaissance, with evermore serious Rieslings (as opposed to simple Blue Nun clones) emerging from an ever larger number of wineries. With the consulting input of Fritz Hasselbach, a leading German Riesling producer, Mission Hill has joined the ranks those making finely crafted Riesling in British Columbia.

Mission Hill grows Riesling in several of its vineyards, including the attractive vineyard not far from the winery, (also used to make icewines), located on the slope of Mt. Boucherie, which is thought to be an extinct volcano.

This wine has attractive aromas of lime and minerals, with citrus flavours, but also notes of peaches. The fine backbone of minerals reflects the complex terroir (volcanic soil). The wine, with good but not searing acidity, has a refreshing, dry finish. Ready now, this wine also will age very well. 89

The Reviewer

John Schreiner

John Schreiner has been covering the wines of British Columbia for the past 30 years and has written 10 books on the wines of Canada and BC. He has judged at major competitions and is currently a panel member for the Lieutenant Governor’s Awards of Excellence in Wine. Both as a judge and as a wine critic, he approaches each wine not to find fault, but to find excellence. That he now finds the latter more often than the former testifies to the dramatic improvement shown by BC winemaking in the past decade.
