Loma Prieta Winery 2006 Pinot Noir, Saveria Vineyard (Santa Cruz Mountains)

Loma Prieta Winery

2006 Pinot Noir, Saveria Vineyard
(Santa Cruz Mountains)

While their own estate vineyard, located at plus 2300 feet, comes on line, Amy and Paul Kemp of Loma Prieta Winery have been buying fruit from the well-groomed Saveria Family vineyard in Corralitos. Managed by renowned viticulturist, Prudy Foxx, this vineyard produces consistently excellent fruit, and the result is consistently wonderful wine. The aromas are fine and inviting, ranging from raspberries to rich chocolate cherries to pine and cedar, and flavours as complex and varied as grilled Parma ham and cheese to blackberry pie with huge mountain spice.

Like a piano concerto, everything blends together so beautifully: 11 months in French Mercier (medium toast plus) added that bit of suntan that cool climate grapes crave in the cave. With just the right bit of rhythm, this wine is music, like a Chopin Ballade, filled with wonderfully rich piano glissandes. It’s Dorothy Hamill and Christie Yamaguchi on ice skates, cutting Figure 8s, doing sit spins and pulling off inverted camels to create the perfectly even-keeled and well-orchestrated program. A most excellent wine, and like those most amazing Olympic athletes, well deserving of Gold.
