Dry Creek Vineyard
2005 Sauvignon Blanc Musqué, Taylor's Vineyard(Dry Creek Valley)
In case there’s any confusion, this is 100% Sauvignon Blanc from Dry Creek Valley. “Musqué” means both “musky” and “Muscat-like” in French; lots of wine varieties have a “musqué” mutation and Sauvignon Blanc is no exception. In this bottling, the winery elevated the mutation to a program, because one its contract vineyards has it in abundance. So this is an unusual take on Sauvignon Blanc, one that I found highly enjoyable.
The scents wafting up from the glass include fresh-cut Granny Smith apple, lime zest, and crushed strawflower petals. You put the wine in your mouth, though, and you get a musky, melony, Muscat-like sweetness that just keeps expanding and lifting despite serious body and palate weight. Though there’s no oak in the wine, finish has a nice dark dimension - Yet somehow it still comes out as a refreshing California Sauvignon Blanc in the end. Statuesque for SB, and satisfying for all that.
