2005 Zinfandel , Tori Vineyard(Dry Creek Valley)
Dry Creek Valley lore holds that Zinfandel leans to the red-fruit side or the black-fruit side depending on where it’s grown in the valley. Then there are the parts of the appellation that have nothing to do with “valley,” such as Tori Vineyard (named for the Wilson’s daughter Victoria) way up at the top of the appellation at an elevation of 2400 feet. It’s still warm up there, but it’s also in the path of sea breezes that chill things down overnight.
The result from 2005 was a deliciously blueberry-inflected Zinfandel that got super-ripe (16.1% alcohol) but never lost its spice and brambly berry qualities. While the blueberry is a bit more prominent in the aromas and the finish, intense and warm blackberry flavors are stronger in the entry and the mid-palate. It all harmonizes beautifully, and the wine effortlessly conveys its size and strength without angles or elbows. If you like to age Zinfandel, this is a prime candidate.
