ELEANOR & RAY HEALD

The Healds have been writing about wine since 1978. Following their each earning a Masters Degree in Chemistry, they traveled the world of wine to expand their knowledge. Winemakers and viticulturists around the globe have been eager to "talk tech" with them because they understand the chemical intricacies of winegrowing.

As print journalists, Eleanor and Ray are contributing editors for the consumer-oriented Quarterly Review of Wines (QRW) and industry-focused Practical Winery & Vineyard (PWV) periodicals. Additionally, the Healds write their "Focus on Wine" column and "Wine Picks" recommendations for Gannett's Observer & Eccentric Newspapers.

They have been judges at national and international wine competitions and for over 20 years, they made wine fun and user-friendly by conducting wine seminars for adult audiences. They halted this aspect in 1999 to create time to work with their attorneys to sue their residence State of Michigan for its discriminatory and anti-competitive direct wine shipping laws, taking the issue through the U.S. court system and winning Heald v. Engler unanimously in the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. Michigan appealed the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court that heard it as Granholm v. Heald and issued an opinion in favor of the Healds in May 2005 declaring Michigan's wine laws unconstitutional.

Having been instrumental in changing Michigan's wine shipping laws to favor both the Michigan wine industry and consumers, the Healds are now pleased to represent the wines and wineries of Michigan’s three major AVAs – Old Mission Peninsula, Lake Michigan Shore and Leelanau Peninsula – as their Appellation America beat so that consumers and industry personnel may learn the unique aspects of cool climate varieties grown in these distinctive AVAs.
