Varietal Notes:
Alicante Bouschet, or simply known as Alicante, was developed in 1866 by Louis Bouschet and son Henri by cross-breeding Grenache and Petite Bouschet. This old-world, black-skinned grape is suited to warmer climates such as the historic Cucamonga Valley and can still be found in France, Spain, Italy, South Africa. In Portugal it is an allowable grape in the production of port. In the 1930’s this native of southern France accounted for a third of all grape production in California.
Alicante is one of the world’s few grapes with a lively, red-pigmented pulp and juice. It is a rare treasure for winemakers as it contributes unique tannins and color that no other variety can rival.
Our family has grown this unique grape in Cucamonga for over 80 years. Enjoy this rich, well-defined (Solera-barrel aged), dark Alicante port wine as a sweet sipper after dinner or over fresh fruits/berries, cakes and creams. Great with fine cigars too!
