Vineyard Notes:
This Zinfandel Primi ws crafted from fruit grown in Orchid Hill's estate vineyard on
Paso Robles’ cool Westside. The most elevated portion of the vineyard is planted to the Primitivo close of Zinfandel, where shallow soils restrict excessive vine vigor, allowing exceptional light penetratration into the canopy and onto the ripening fruit. The clusters and berries on this site are small, providing exceptional richness of character, ultra-dark color and spicy aromatics.
An outstanding vintage for Zinfandel, 2004 was sunny and warm throughout the summer, with some heat spikes causing concern. But regular after noon breezes blowing across the hilltops moderated these weather patterns at our estate, and slowed the ripening process to allow tannins to ripen in tandem with sugars. The resulting wines are bold in color and flavor, with ripe, supple tannins for structure.
Winemaker Tasting Notes:
On this austere site, planted with much-sought-after
Primitivo clone of Zinfandel, vines struggle but manage to maintain a naturally perfect balance between foliage and clusters. The resulting wine displays a marked sophistication often lacking in Zinfandel. Rich, spicy flavors and deep intense pigmentation are a sure sign of fully ripened fruit. Classically structured, the 2003 drinks well now, but will age gracefully for several years.
