Graciano Grape Details
Graciano (a.k.a. Morrastel)
Graciano is Tempranillo’s silent but compelling partner in Spain’s famous red wines from the Rioja DOCa. Although recognized by many experts to offer the most complex aromatics and a fine structure to the wines of the region, the vine’s tendency to low yields has seen its use almost eliminated in northern Spain’s vineyards. A similar story is echoed in France’s Languedoc-Rousillon region where the varietal is known as Morrastel. When used, Graciano offers complex aromatics, spice and life preserving acidity to the blend. Virginians can thank Chrysalis Vineyards for planting this noble Spanish varietal.
