Pietra-Santa Vineyards and Winery

2005 'Amore' Pinot Grigio, Estate
(Cienega Valley)

What a perfect wine for Valentine’s Day or any other romantic occasion: a wine whose name includes the Italian word for love. Actually, there’s another story behind how the wine got its name: The vines are farmed on a steeply terraced hillside, so producing the wine is a labor of love. But you can make up your own story to tell the object of your affections.

The name aside, this is a lovely Pinot Grigio. Many Pinot Grigios are downright insipid, but this one offers plenty of crisp, juicy melon and citrus flavors and a firm core of acidity. There’s no oak to clutter things up: The wine is fermented in stainless steel and bottled young to preserve its freshness. There’s just a touch of astringency on the finish, so the wine, which sells for $18, is better with food than on its own. The winery suggests pairing it with seafood; I’d drink it with shrimp, scallops or, if you want to continue the aphrodisiac theme, with oysters on the half shell.

The Reviewer

Laurie Daniel

Laurie Daniel, wine columnist for the San Jose Mercury News, has been reviewing wine for more than 10 years. She doesn’t use numbers, preferring to describe her recommended wines and let consumers decide for themselves. Laurie believes that bigger isn’t necessarily better; she’s partial to wines of balance, finesse and character. Her particular interests are Pinot Noir (versions that really taste like Pinot, that is) and aromatic whites like Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Gewürztraminer.
