Four Vines Winery
2004 "The Maverick" Zinfandel(Amador County)
While a “Naked” unoaked Chardonnay and several Rhone blends are in the portfolio, this is a Zinfandel house. Winemaker Christian Tietje’s vision was to craft high quality Zin from some of California’s best old vine sources. His releases come from Paso Robles, Sonoma, Napa and Amador. His passion for wine grew out of his experience as a chef while he was living in Boston. He and his partner, Susan Mahler, moved from San Francisco to Paso Robles in 1990 and set up shop. They recently joined forces with Bill Grant, a childhood friend of Christian’s, to take the winery from 14,000 to 40,000 cases.
This bright ruby red wine comes from 100-plus year old vines in The Original Grandpere Vineyard and from 40-year old vines in the Deaver and Linstead Vineyards. It is blended with Syrah from the Bailey Vineyard. Full, rich, and round, the wine has aromas of earth, stewed fruits, braised veal, maple syrup, toast, char, and vanilla. The palate is richly layered with strawberry, cranberry, boysenberry, and blueberry notes, and has a nice interplay of oak and acidity. The finish is long and lively.
