Holly's Hill Winery
2006 Viognier, Estate(El Dorado County)
Pale straw color clues you in to a savory grassy aroma, with hints of spring wildflowers and lemon zest. It smells like freshly peeled tangerines and even key limes, along with a pinch of coriander.
This is a very crisp, nicely refreshing wine, with first pick not-yet-ripe peaches, and zesty pluot and gooseberry flavors. There is a creamy key lime pie component that is quite lovely, along with the very refreshing acid-bite, and clean-sweep finish.
This is 100 percent Viognier from the winery’s estate Rhone varietal vineyards in El Dorado, in the idyllic foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The wine was done in neutral oak for 5 months. It’s a complete contrast to the Viogniers I’ve been plagued with from Lodi, where frankly, it is just too warm to do this grape justice. If you’re looking for a spring flower fresh and crisp wine, and Sauvignon Blanc is a little too intense for you, this might work, especially with fresh-shucked oysters and a squeeze of lime.
