Winemaking Notes:
This is the third release of Pinot Noir from the Klindt estate vineyard which was planted in 1998. The 8 acres produced 20.5 ton in 2003, just over 2.5 tons to an acre. This blend is about 40% Pommard clone, 20% clone 113, 25% clone 115, 10% clone 777 and 5% clone 677. The grapes were destemmed into 1 ton fermentors. We fermented the wine with native yeasts rather than adding commercial yeast in order to develop the most complexity by allowing the multiple strains of wild yeast to impart their particular aromas and flavors. We used just 30% new oak, which bucks the trend of many high end producers who use up to 100% new oak, but for the Claudia Springs estate Pinot Noir we want to emphasize the purity of the fruit rather than wood.
Winemaker Tasting Notes:
The result is a very concentrated wine with aromas of lavender, black cherry and spice. Black cherry, raspberry and vanilla predominate in the flavors which lead to a long, lingering finish. This is a big, juicy wine with moderate tannins that will provide enjoyment for years to come.
