Clonal Notes:
The Pinot Noir in our vineyard is comprised of almost equal proportions of clones 114, 115, 777, Pommard and 2A. Each clone brings a different character to the final wine. Some are more aromatic, singing the high, pretty notes, while others bring denser, darker fruit characteristics.
Winemaking Notes:
We destem the fruit and leave approximately 50% whole berries. After a brief cold soak, we ferment the lots separately in insulated bins at fairly warm temperatures and punch them down 3 times daily. We press the must and go straight to barrel from the press. The 100% French oak is from several coopers and several forests, 25% new. Malolactic is conducted in barrel and the wine is left until the initial racking in the spring. Two more rackings and a light filtration precede bottling in the fall following harvest.
Tasting Notes:
Cherry, strawberry, cranberry, pomegranate, a little raspberry, smoke and spice are all evident in this wine. The weight is medium-bodied as is typical of cool climate Pinot Noir, and the aromas and flavors are fairly concentrated and intense as is typical of the variety. Shady Lane Pinot Noir shows lots of fruit in its youth and develops nice earthy nuances after 2 or 3 years in the bottle.
