2006 Pinot Gris(British Columbia)
In earlier vintages, California-trained winemaker Lawrence Herder was something of a traditionalist, using cork closures and announcing it proudly on the label, with the tag: “Natural cork.” This white is his first wine with a screw cap closure which, as New Zealand wineries have demonstrated, is the superior closure for preserving fruit aromas and flavours.
Herder made this unoaked wine with grapes from vineyards in the south Okanagan and the Similkameen Valley. “By blending these two we have created an even better aroma,” the winery suggests. This wine begins with delicate notes of pears and peaches on the nose, leading to flavours of pears and apples and citrus. The texture shows a rich middle palate but the finish is crisp. The overall impression of this wine is refreshing and delicious. Only 340 cases were released. 87 points.
