Wine: Bennett Lane Winery 2005 Maximus “White Feasting Wine” (Napa Valley)

Bennett Lane Winery

2005 Maximus “White Feasting Wine”
(Napa Valley)

Without Italy, where would we be? Like so many others, Randy and Lisa Lynch were seduced by the wine, food, and culture of this glorious land. Inspired enough to purchase acreage in Napa Valley, the Lynch’s went on to produce Maximus, named after the wine-loving, 2nd century Roman Emperor Magnus Maximus.

This “feasting wine” is produced in both red and white versions. Both feature authentic 2000 year old Roman denarius coins on the label. The Lynch’s goal is to produce structured wines for the table rather than round, mouth filling cocktail styles.

This blend of 88% Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Chardonnay, and 2% Muscat is pale straw yellow, viscous, and very fruit forward with mango, peach, lanolin, vanillin, and lemon drop notes. Incredibly silky and round on the palate, it is dripping with peach, pineapple, and honey notes. The finish has a vigorous prickle similar to that found in guava juice – decadently ripe and tropical flavors offset by a jolt of acidity. Satisfying as a cocktail, the wine really shines at the table and carries itself well across a broad spectrum of cuisines. With the holidays just around the corner think of this as your “ace in the hole” white wine.
