Arrowleaf Cellars 2005 Bacchus (Okanagan Valley)

Arrowleaf Cellars

2005 Bacchus
(Okanagan Valley)

The Bacchus grape was officially classified in 1972 at the German research station of Geilweilerhof, where the variety was created by mating a Riesling/Sylvaner cross with Müller-Thurgau. The result is a useful cool-climate grape: it ripens early with good sugar, an exotic fragrance and good acidity (unless that acid is blown away by unusually warm weather).

The variety has found a good home in Arrowleaf’s north Okanagan vineyard, particularly in the 2005 vintage, the best for Okanagan white wines in a decade. The wine has an intense spicy perfume. Light and refreshing, the wine shows zesty citrus and green melon flavours. The finish is crisp and dry. Arrowleaf is switching to screw cap closures with its 2005 wines, to the benefit of fresh wines like this Bacchus. 86 points.

The Reviewer

John Schreiner

John Schreiner has been covering the wines of British Columbia for the past 30 years and has written 10 books on the wines of Canada and BC. He has judged at major competitions and is currently a panel member for the Lieutenant Governor’s Awards of Excellence in Wine. Both as a judge and as a wine critic, he approaches each wine not to find fault, but to find excellence. That he now finds the latter more often than the former testifies to the dramatic improvement shown by BC winemaking in the past decade.
