Blackwood Lane Vineyards & Winery

2006 Siegerrebe
(Fraser Valley)

Just opening in Langley in the Fraser Valley, Blackwood Lane is owned by entrepreneurs Carlos Lee (auto parts inventor) and Charles Herrold (building products company). Not ones to let opportunity walk by the door, they agreed to make wine when a small vineyardist nearby in the valley offered them Siegerrebe grapes in the 2006 vintage.

They have since struck a deal to take over management of the vineyard. In last fall’s vintage, winemaker Herrold was surprised to find the Siegerrebe arrived at the winery at only 17.5% Brix. He confronted the challenge head on by chaptalizing the must to make a wine that, fermented to total dryness with a special Alsace yeast, has 12% alcohol. He made 110 cases.

The result is an attractive white, with aromas and flavours of spice, grapefruit and limes. Medium-bodied, the wine has a zesty acidity on the finish that makes this a refreshingly crisp wine. Siegerrebe is a German cross of Gewürztraminer and Madeleine Angevine. Happily, the character of Gewürztraminer dominates the personality of this wine. 88 points.

John Schreiner

John Schreiner has been covering the wines of British Columbia for the past 30 years and has written 10 books on the wines of Canada and BC. He has judged at major competitions and is currently a panel member for the Lieutenant Governor’s Awards of Excellence in Wine. Both as a judge and as a wine critic, he approaches each wine not to find fault, but to find excellence. That he now finds the latter more often than the former testifies to the dramatic improvement shown by BC winemaking in the past decade.
