Wine Recommendation

Wine:Nk'Mip Cellars (Inkameep) 2006 Riesling (Okanagan Valley)

Nk'Mip Cellars (Inkameep)

2006 Riesling
(Okanagan Valley)

Because the Osoyoos Indian Band owns both the Nk’Mip Cellars winery and the storied Inkameep Vineyard at nearby Oliver, winemaker Randy Picton has the advantage of well-grown grapes from mature vines. The vineyard has been growing Riesling since the 1970s. Because there is a mix of vine age here, Picton chooses not to call this an old vines Riesling even though the wine’s minerality has the fingerprints of old vines.

The wine is crisp, with refreshing flavours of lemon and lime. The vibrant acidity combines with the mineral notes to give the wine a steely structure and a dry finish. The personality of this wine recalls the fine Clare Rieslings of Australia; like them, it has good potential to age. 88 points.

John Schreiner

John Schreiner has been covering the wines of British Columbia for the past 30 years and has written 10 books on the wines of Canada and BC. He has judged at major competitions and is currently a panel member for the Lieutenant Governor’s Awards of Excellence in Wine. Both as a judge and as a wine critic, he approaches each wine not to find fault, but to find excellence. That he now finds the latter more often than the former testifies to the dramatic improvement shown by BC winemaking in the past decade.
