VIE Winery
2005 “L’Imaginaire” Grenache(Santa Barbara County)
Bryan Kane, Bryan Robertson, Rachel Blatt, and Barry Dorf partnered to form VIE, a winery dedicated to Rhone varietals and Zinfandel. This wine is 77 percent Grenache, which comes from old vine fruit in the Alta Mesa Vineyard in eastern Santa Barbara’s Cuyama Valley. The vineyard is just above Barnwood at an elevation of 3200 feet. Cold soaking and both whole berry and whole cluster fermentation are used. These techniques ramp up color and fruit intensity. The wine was aged for 16 months in French oak.
Bright, well saturated purple, with slow moving legs, this rich wine has keen aromas of strawberry, vanilla, and clove. I imagine it is what the air would smell like standing in an old-fashioned ice cream parlor with a double-dip strawberry cone in one hand and a pack of Adam’s Clove Chewing Gum in the other. On the palate an intense burst of fruit – blueberry, boysenberry, and plum – gives way to oak vanillans and a chewy, cranberry tart finish.
