Wine Recommendation

Domaine de Grand Pre 2006 Seyval Blanc (Nova Scotia)

Domaine de Grand Pré

2006 Seyval Blanc
(Nova Scotia)

Green hues hint at cool climate origins and portend a wine with delicate structure and firm acidity. Initial floral notes precede a nose that is markedly fruity for the variety, with melon and citrus highlights. Racy acidity makes it difficult to tell if there is any RS in this wine, but what’s more important is the overall balance here, regardless of the individual amounts of acids and sugars. The moderate 12 percent alcohol correlates with the overall balance of this wine.

The palate, as suspected, is delicate and not deeply complex, but pretty and pleasant from entry to a long finish which carries all the lovely elements.

This wine represents a positive trend toward a better understanding of this variety in Nova Scotia. While it has not been a personal favorite in the past, recent bottlings like this one and those of other producers are setting a new standard, and a very good one at that.

Roger Dial

Under various hats (winegrower/maker/negotiant/writer) Roger Dial has been tasting wine professionally for 40 years. He regards varietal and regional diversity as the best virtues of wine, and is ever-suspicious of the quest (by producers and critics, alike) for “universal greatness”. His tasting regime is simple: Is the wine technically sound? Is it interesting? Warning: he’s a sucker for all aromatic varieties.
