Seven Stones Winery 2005 Pinot Noir (Similkameen Valley)

Seven Stones Winery

2005 Pinot Noir
(Similkameen Valley)

Seven Stones is the newest estate winery in the Similkameen Valley. The tasting room will not open until next spring and this wine has not yet been released. This review offers a heads-up for those who want to get in line for the wine, of which only 68 cases have been made.

The winery is being launched by George and Vivienne Hanson. A former Yukon telephone company manager, Hanson has planted 15 acres of grapes in the Similkameen since 2000. He calls the vineyard Harmony One, maintaining that the grape grower is conducting an orchestra of vines. He has wielded his baton so well that he has been selling fruit to such leading wineries as Township 7, Stag’s Hollow and Golden Mile. Seven Stones is starting small, opening next spring with about 700 cases, followed by 1,000 cases from the 2006 vintage.

This Pinot Noir is a promising start. Lovely even to look at, the wine’s aromas are pure fruit, hints of strawberries and cherries that carry through to the flavours. The texture is voluptuous and silky at the same time. The spicy finish is persistent. Bottom line: a charming Pinot Noir. 88 points.

John Schreiner

John Schreiner has been covering the wines of British Columbia for the past 30 years and has written 10 books on the wines of Canada and BC. He has judged at major competitions and is currently a panel member for the Lieutenant Governor’s Awards of Excellence in Wine. Both as a judge and as a wine critic, he approaches each wine not to find fault, but to find excellence. That he now finds the latter more often than the former testifies to the dramatic improvement shown by BC winemaking in the past decade.
