Visiting the Winery
The winding road invites you to slow the pace of a hectic life and enjoy the rolling hills, the lovely meadows, the river bluffs and the rich farmland at the river’s edge. The small towns of Defiance and Matson, and the ghostly communities of Howell, Toonerville, and Hamburg (marked only by cemeteries) will be found by those that take the time to explore.
As the Missouri River bends to the west in the southernmost part of St. Charles County, you enter the renowned Augusta Wine District, an area of rolling vineyards planted in rich loess soil deposited by receding glaciers some 25,000 years ago. It is in this area of ridges rising hundreds of feet above the river that German immigrants chose to build their homes and communities in the early 1800’s. By 1850, this area was an established wine-growing district. With eleven wineries near the village prior to Prohibition, the Augusta region winemakers played a major role in making Missouri the second largest wine producing state in the nation. Augusta remains a microcosm of yesterday with its old-world wood and metalcraft shops, antique emporiums, tavern, restaurants and — of course — wineries.
Today, the history lives in the magnificent wines produced by Montelle Winery. Winner of numerous awards, Montelle has achieved fame for superb dry and semi-dry table wines. Montelle features such premium white French hybrid wines as Seyval & Vignoles and distinguished red wines as Chambourcin & Cynthiana. The River Country semi-dry wines are always popular, as are the German-style white wines Montelle has perfected. But the winery is also noted for its rich dessert and fruit wines. Its popular St. Wenceslaus, a red wine with a special mixture of numerous herbs and spices, is available from Thanksgiving through the cold winter months.
Montelle is located on 20 acres atop Osage Ridge, approximately 1½ miles east of Augusta on Highway 94. The facilities and estate vineyards are situated 400 feet above the Missouri River, and command a magnificent view of the river valley, the village of Augusta and the surrounding farms and vineyards. Complimentary wine tasting, the Klondike Café (featuring freshly baked breads, gourmet sandwiches, and pizzas), free live music most weekends from April to October, Sunset Dinners, handicap facilities and other amenities are available to the visitor. Special events and free, live musicians are scheduled throughout the year.
The winery is a combination of Montelle Vineyards, founded by Clayton Byers in 1970, and Osage Ridge Winery founded in 1984. In 1998, Montelle Winery at Osage Ridge was purchased by Tony Kooyumjian. We welcome your visit and the opportunity to have you sample the hospitality of the Augusta Wine District.
