Russian River Valley (AVA)

THE ABCS of J

When Judy Jordan created the J brand more than twenty years ago it was focused solely on its now renowned sparkling wine. Ever since releasing its 1994 Nicole’s Vineyard Pinot Noir, however, J Vineyards and Winery has been adding selected still wines to its Sonoma portfolio – focusing now on Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and several bottlings of Pinot Noir.

We recently met with Judy Jordan at the J Visitor Center in Healdsburg for an in-depth look at the winery, its vineyards, and its expanding lineup of wines. A tray of flute glasses greeted us, and as we moved into the “Bubble Room” (J’s private tasting salon), sipping our J Vintage Brut 2000, Judy shared her passion for the Russian River Valley as a world-class wine region.

DropCap Describing the effects of ancient volcanoes, deep tectonic upheavals, and even a change in direction of the river itself, Judy compared “the twenty or so distinct soil types we have in this small valley” to those of other great winegrowing areas. “Burgundy? – I love it to pieces, but they’re working with only 5 to 10 different soil types. Our vineyards span the length of the Russian River appellation, and every one is completely different. As a geologist, (referring to her Stanford degree), I’m in rock heaven here, because there’s so much diversity in our soils.”
