Wine:Cinnabar Vineyard and Winery 2005 Mercury Rising Blanc (California)

Cinnabar Vineyard and Winery

2005 Mercury Rising Blanc
(California)

This blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Semillon is a nice mélange of many appealing white wine traits: it’s aromatic, fruity, spicy, acidic and just a tad sweet on the finish. The Mercury Rising red wine blend was such a hit, it doesn’t surprise me that Cinnabar came out with a blanc version.

The low alcohol is quite refreshing: it’s nice to have a decent quaffer that doesn’t bowl you over like an SUV in the fast lane being driven by a cell-phone implanted high-powered attorney who’s late for court. The floral aromas of honeysuckle are complemented by the flinty notes, and the peachy-nectarine juices of the Viognier are kept in check by the more austere flintiness of the Semillon. The Sauvignon really is the prettier sister here, though, and she steals the show with her vibrant citrusy acidity. Like high heels with blue jeans, this wine has a certain disregard for decorum that is pleasing and intriguing, but not too complicated. Don’t go nuts analyzing it. Just drink the stuff! Quite nice as a cocktail wine or pair it with spicy pad Thai noodles with shrimp.
