Bargetto Winery 2005 Zinfandel (Lodi)

Bargetto Winery

2005 Zinfandel
(Lodi)

Really, this one was a total surprise. The nose is all pure Zinfandel in the style that most people who have any history with Zin will totally embrace. This smells, tastes and finishes like perfect Zin from the old days. Although is it 80 percent Zinfandel (from the Schmierer Vineyard and Rauser Vineyard), it also contains 20 percent Carignane from the Rauser Vineyard. By itself, the Carignane is a mellow, earthy, deeply-rooted wine, and here, it adds a very nice cushion to the fruit-loaded Zinfandel.

Picked at 24.6° Brix, the Bargetto Zinfandel has a delightful acid core that really makes an ideal food wine. It is brim-filled with great blackberries, elderberries and raspberries, plus a very nice hint of cola. There is nothing overripe or overwrought here: just plain, old-fashioned, honest-to-goodness Zin. It’s the “before time” Zin, before the age of jamaholic fruit bombs that push 18 percent and pretend they’re not Port. Ha! This wine is just like the handsome farm girl from Iowa before she went to Hollywood and got all gussied up. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.
