Groth Vineyards and Winery 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

Groth Vineyards and Winery

2004 Cabernet Sauvignon
(Oakville ~ Napa Valley)

This is another in a long line of beautifully made Cabernet Sauvignons from the Napa Valley. I’m so enamored of the vintage, which produced an abundance of classic, even-keeled wines that are distinctly from their place.

This one has perfumed blackberry aromas with a shade of oak. It’s smooth and stylish in the mouth with some of that toasty oak, a hint of chocolate and lots of blackberry goodness. The tannins are finely honed for aging up to about 10 years. Here is a Cab that came in at a rather high alcohol level – 14.7 percent – but it doesn’t detract from the quality. The wine spent 20 months in half new French barrels.

Alan Goldfarb

Alan Goldfarb has been writing about and reviewing wine for 17 years. His reviews have been published in the St. Helena Star, San Jose Mercury, San Francisco Examiner, Decanter, and Wine Enthusiast, among others. Not once has he used a point system, star system, or an iconic symbol to quantify a wine. What counts in Mr. Goldfarb’s criteria when judging a wine is: how it tastes in the glass; is it well-constructed; its food compatibility; and presence of redeeming regional attributes.
