Prince Edward Island, off the coasts of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, is Canada’s smallest province. It has just a single winery, Rossignol, in Little Sands, on the shore of Northumberland Strait. The island experiences cold winters, with frequent Atlantic storms and moderate summers. The freezing and warming cycles of the Strait limit late winter frost damage and extend the growing season. With more than 130 days of frost-free growing, Rossignol harvests Seyval Blanc, Ortega, Marechal Foch and Valiant. The winery also grows vinifera cultivars in greenhouses left over from a failed attempt to establish an island tobacco industry. Although the winery works alone on the island, one wonders if an eventual relationship between Northumberland Strait wineries (including those in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick) might be productive.
