Tinhorn Creek Vineyards 2002 Oldfield's Collection Merlot (Okanagan Valley)

Tinhorn Creek Vineyards

2002 Oldfield's Collection Merlot
(Okanagan Valley)

This is the second release of Tinhorn Creek's reserve tier Merlot. This time, the entire production of 1,578 cases is sealed with Stelvin closures.

The blend is 86% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 1% Syrah. This is a dark, concentrated wine, starting with aromas of spice and blueberries, going on to flavours of plum, blueberries, with mineral notes for added complexity. The firm tannins will evolve as the wine ages; and because of the closure, the ripe, fresh berry flavours will persist. Score: 87 points with potential to rise to 90 with a few years of bottle maturity. (Tasted November 13, 2005)

Re-tasted April 20, 2006: tannins still evolving; fruit flavours remain vibrant and the wine is full-bodied. Score: 89 points.

John Schreiner

John Schreiner has been covering the wines of British Columbia for the past 30 years and has written 10 books on the wines of Canada and BC. He has judged at major competitions and is currently a panel member for the Lieutenant Governor’s Awards of Excellence in Wine. Both as a judge and as a wine critic, he approaches each wine not to find fault, but to find excellence. That he now finds the latter more often than the former testifies to the dramatic improvement shown by BC winemaking in the past decade.
