Wine:Terra Blanca Vintners 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Estate Vineyard (Red Mountain)

Terra Blanca Vintners

2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Estate Vineyard
(Red Mountain)

Keith Pilgrim and his wife ReNae own and operate this 80-acre vineyard and 30,000-case production winery in Red Mountain, an American Viticultural Area. The winery is located at the confluence of the Yakima and Columbia Valleys, below Horse Heaven Hills. Keith is winemaker, and ReNae is controller. The couple plans to continue clearing and planting their remaining acreage – the property is 300 acres - which began as rattlesnake infested sagebrush, and to dedicate a portion of the new plantings to clonal research.

On appearance this reserve Cabernet Sauvignon shows its maturity with gradations of color from ruby to garnet. It is fairly saturated and viscous. On the nose it has cedar, jam, chalk, and slate notes. On the palate, however, it shows its youth. It is full, dry, taut, and linear, with deep currant berry fruit, firm oak tannins, and a long, oaky finish. This would be delicious, decanted for aeration, with braised veal osso bucco, braised lamb shanks, spit roasted leg of lamb with Gruyere stuffed mushroom caps, glazed venison paté, pork loin steaks with mushroom/Cabernet Sauvignon sauce, or veal ragout with cepes and sage.
