The San Ysidro District, encompassed by the larger Santa Clara Valley, has no wineries of its own. The appellation has built its reputation on the quality of fruit grown in the well-established San Ysidro and Le Mistral Vineyards. From these vineyards, wineries in Santa Clara source Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Bordeaux varietals. The area is defined by the maritime influences that regulate its climate. Pacific Ocean fog and coastal breezes follow the Pajaro River to San Ysidro, cooling the vineyards which sit in a low-lying area of the Diablo Range foothills. Significantly cooler than the rest of Santa Clara Valley, the vineyards benefit from the extra sunshine they receive as a result of their southwest-facing slopes.
