Troon Vineyard: winery information

Winemaker: Herb Quady

Herb Quady grew up with grape vines, working on his family vineyard in Madera, California. Quady Winery specialized in producing sweet wines including Port and Muscat. After spending his childhood on a vineyard he went to University of California Santa Cruz to study Political Science with the dream of becoming a lawyer. During his time at UC Santa Cruz he had a change of heart, deciding to return to the land and his family's legacy. Quady still has a weakness for producing sweet wines, but specializes in Rhone style wines.

Quady's winemaking passion starts in the vineyard by practicing sustainable, organic growing which allows the vines to express their natural characteristics. His winemaking style continues into the winery with a "hands-off", minimalist approach to winemaking. This allows each wine in each vintage to be distinct and independent.

Quady realized the "awesome potential for wine grape growing" in the Applegate Valley after researching every aspect of this wine region from soil type to climatic variation. The natural scenic beauty paired with the potential for making "world class" wines moved Quady and his family to the Applegate Valley, where he is now the winemaker for Troon Vineyard. Currently, Quady is developing new wines including Syrah, Port, Rosé and unique white and red blends.

Quady completed the Viticulture and Enology program from California State University Fresno in 2002. During his graduate study at Fresno State, Quady produced the 2001 Fresno State Rosé which was awarded "Best in the New World" from the New World Wine Competition. While attending Fresno State, Quady worked as Assistant Winemaker at his family winery, Quady Winery.

Prior to moving to the Applegate Valley, Quady worked as Associate Winemaker for Bonny Doon where he was instrumental in producing Big House Red (red blend), Big House White (white blend), Pacific Rim Riesling, and Malvasia Bianca (slightly sweet white blend).

Estate Vineyard Acreage
Troon Vineyard is an internationally recognized, award winning, boutique winery, with a team dedicated to the pursuit of "good times and fine wines." Located in the viticultural heart of the Applegate Valley AVA, the winery and vineyard are set on a beautiful 98 acre property with breathtaking panoramic views. Troon Vineyard is situated about half way between Grants Pass and Jacksonville (approximately 20 minutes from either location).

Making only small lots (mostly under 300 cases) of: Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Chardonnay, among others, allows us to have new and interesting wines ready for you every time you visit us. Our winemaking philosophy has always been traditional and minimalist. We continue to strive to bring only the best fruit into the winery from small estate vineyards and to let the nature of the grapes express themselves. Our goal is to make the perfect wine, to make no compromises in our approach and our effort to achieve this.

In the vineyard, we follow organic principles and aspire to a closed loop, sustainable farming environment. No herbicides or pesticides are used, and all tending of the vines is done by hand. The goal is the perfect fruit. We have recently planted 16 acres of new varietals which include: Primitivo, Petite Syrah, Rousanne, Marsanne, and Sangiovese. Other acreage planted includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Syrah, Viognier, and Cabernet Franc.

We look forward to seeing you soon.
