This appellation, named after the picturesque town located within its borders, is one of Ontario’s largest DVAs. The region encompasses all the land within the St. David’s Bench, Four Mile Creek, Niagara Lakeshore and Niagara River appellations. Unlike the smaller sub appellations, producers using the Niagara-on-the-Lake appellation need only use 85% of grapes sourced within the appellations boundaries. Wineries labeling using one of the smaller sub-appellations are required to use 100% of the grapes. The overall climate of the region benefits from the moderating effects of both Lake Ontario and Niagara River. Despite only recently acquiring appellation status, the Niagara-on-the-Lake appellation can already be found on the labels of such prominent wineries as Stratus. This should come as no surprise as the Niagara-on-the-Lake name has widespread recognition within Canada, and the region boast many of Canada’s pre-eminent producers including such established stars as Inniskillin, Peller Estates, Jackson Triggs and Chateau des Charmes.
